Issued by the Income Tax Department, the PAN card links all financial transactions of an individual or entity. It prevents tax evasion and is mandatory for filing IT returns, opening bank accounts, investing in mutual funds, and transactions above Rs. 50,000. It also serves as a nationally recognized proof of identity.

Eligibility Criteria

Any Indian citizen, NRI, OCI, PIO, or foreign national who pays taxes or conducts business in India. Companies, HUFs, and trusts are also required to obtain a PAN.

Application Process

1. Visit the NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL official portal.

2. Select Form 49A (for Indian citizens) or 49AA (for foreigners).

3. Fill details and upload documents.

4. Pay the processing fee (approx Rs. 107).

5. Alternatively, use Aadhaar e-KYC on the IT portal for an instant, free e-PAN.
